143 kilometres of flying fun whilst training at home

Training performances are often described in pigeon racing, but rarely documented in such detail as in this report. Jürgen von Ramin tracked his young pigeons’ flight using GPS and supplemented the data with weather information. This has resulted in a comprehensive record of an exceptionally long ‘Am-Haus’ training session.

Initial situation

Having received a great deal of positive feedback from other pigeon fanciers regarding Berger Pigeons products, Jürgen von Ramin wanted to share his own experiences. In doing so, he attaches particular importance to presenting a factual account.

He himself points out that personal accounts cannot replace scientific control groups. At the same time, objective measurement data provide a verifiable basis for documenting a training flight.

Caring for young pigeons

According to the owner, the young pigeons are regularly fed with VitalDrink and SymBiotic supplied.

According to his observations, this means that the animals are in very good health. He expressly states that he is not providing any direct scientific evidence, but is simply describing his personal experience.

The documented in-house training

In his view, the conditions on the day of training were favourable:

  • Enthalpy value: 45 kJ/kg
  • Wind force 2–3 from 330° north-west
  • Visibility: 27 kilometres
  • overcast sky

Under these conditions, the young pigeons trained for a total of 2 hours and 8 minutes.

During this time, according to the GPS record, they travelled 143.52 kilometres back. The average speed was 1,122.42 metres per minute.

What the breeder found particularly remarkable was that the entire flock took off together and also returned home as a single, cohesive group. According to his observations, there were neither any stray birds nor any incidents involving birds of prey.

Interesting observations during the flight

One aspect in particular caught Jürgen von Ramin’s attention.

Although the young pigeons had been trained for north-westerly release directions, their flight path initially took them in a south-westerly direction. He found this behaviour surprising, as the chosen route was not thought to have been familiar to the birds beforehand.

The GPS recording made it possible to retrace and analyse the entire flight path in detail at a later date.

Personal assessment

The breeder deliberately describes his account as a personal experience and, with a touch of humour, refers to a certain element of „broscience“ because there are no control groups.

At the same time, he emphasises that the recorded measurement data can be objectively verified. In his view, the data indicate a smooth training flight without interruptions, during which the young pigeons remained in the air continuously over a long period of time.

Outlook

To round things off, Jürgen von Ramin has already announced his next order.

He is particularly looking forward to BergerPowder No. 1, which he intends to use with his Viennese high-flyers in future. In his view, a powder is particularly well suited to this breed because it prefers small-grain feed mixes and the BergerPearls No.1 which are too coarse for their delicate beaks. This statement relates solely to his personal considerations regarding their future use.

The documented training flight lasted 2 hours and 8 minutes. During this time, a flight distance of 143.52 kilometres was recorded via GPS. These figures are taken from the measurement data documented by the breeder.

How can a training flight be assessed objectively? Jürgen von Ramin documented the home-based training of his young pigeons using precise GPS data and weather readings. His report shows how regular training, good health and verifiable measurement data combine to provide a fascinating snapshot of pigeon racing – without exaggeration and with a deliberately objective view of the results.

BergerPowder No. 1 – Why I developed a powder at all, alongside BergerPearls No. 1!

When I developed BergerPearls No. 1, my aim was clear from the outset. Caring for carrier pigeons should be made easier. Not more complicated. Not more labour-intensive. And certainly not should the fancier have to moisten different powders every day and mix them into the feed. As a biologist, product developer and long-standing carrier pigeon fancier, I have been involved in this field for many years […]

Moulting – The feather is merely the visible result – but of what, exactly?

Why the most important preparation for the next racing season begins during the moulting period „After the race is before the race.“ There is hardly a saying you hear more often in the world of carrier pigeon racing. And indeed: after weeks of intense races, calm finally seems to be setting in. The pigeons are flying less, the strain is easing, and attention turns to the regrowing plumage. […]
